In metric systems, bullet measurements are determined in millimeters (mm). In the Anglo-Saxon measurement system, it is expressed as Caliber (cal).
In short, 1 inch is 2.54 cm (also 1 inch: 25.4 mm).
To calculate how many millimeters (mm) a cartridge is, we use the following formula.
In metric value (i.e., mm) = (25.4/100) x caliber
For instance, to calculate how many mm .45 caliber is:
mm = (25.4/100)x45 (caliber)
=0.254x45
mm = 11.43.
For .22 caliber, it is (0.254x22 caliber) = 5.58 mm.
In other words, .22 caliber = 0.22 inches.
Conversions for some cartridges are as follows.
.22 caliber = 5.58 mm
.25 caliber = 6.35 mm
.30 caliber = 7.62 mm
.38 caliber = 9.65 mm
.45 caliber = 11.43 mm
.50 caliber = 12.70 mm
